Problem Solving

In Mathematics & Science Problem Solving, important role plays the conceptual understanding of the problem itself, as well as the representations created by students, both internal and external. Problems must be realistic and relate to students' everyday experiences. Considering the problem-solving strategy, the focus of our attention should be on the problem solving methodology. This could be modeled by the following equation:

Methodology + Response = Problem Solving

To choose the right strategy is part of any problem solving. Moreover, the deeper understanding and use of different problem-solving strategies help the kids (solvers), on the one hand to simplify and understand the problem, on the other hand to expand their skills.

Example:

Steps:

  • Understanding and representing the problem (including defining the types of information needed to solve it)
  • Collection and organization of appropriate and meaningful information
  • Build and manage an action plan or strategy
  • Use various problem-solving tools
  • Collection, case control and decision-making.
